Andy and Jamie Murray put Great Britain on brink of first Davis Cup win since 1936

THE MURRAY brothers have put Great Britain one win away from a first Davis Cup win since 1936.

Andy Murray can end 79 years of hurt by beating David Goffin in tomorrow’s first reverse singles after he and his older sibling Jamie defeated Goffin and Steve Darcis in a dramatic doubles rubber.

Belgian captain Johan Van Herck’s decision to put Goffin into his pair seemed like it might pay off when he and Darcis stormed to the second set and went a break up in the third.

But a pep talk from GB captain Leon Smith for Jamie seemed to do the trick and as the older Murray improved, so did Britain’s chances of claiming a vital 2-1 lead.

The drama kept on coming, though, in an extraordinarily tense third set which felt pivotal to the whole final.
There were five breaks of serve before Andy Murray held his nerve to put Britain in the driving seat.

An early break kept up the momentum but it was the way the brothers saved seven break points on the Jamie serve before holding for a 3-1 lead which finally knocked the stuffing out of the Belgians.

The Murrays broke again for a 5-2 lead and when Darcis sent a forehand wide, it was all over 6-4 4-6 6-3 6-2.
