Parly disruptions prompt call for urgent meeting

Ten opposition parties excluding the Democratic Alliance (DA) and Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF) say they have written to the Speaker of the National Assembly Baleka Mbete to seek an urgent meeting with her on Wednesday to discuss the disruptions.

On Tuesday, the National Education, Health and Allied Workers Union (Nehawu) disrupted proceedings at Parliament again.


The workers are back on strike after negotiations between the union and Parliament deadlocked. The strike is related to performance bonuses.

Inkatha Freedom Party (IFP) Chief Whip, Narend Singh is leading the 10 opposition parties.

“We have stated in our letter that we are extremely concerned that this has been protracted to an extend that it has been, and that there seems to be ineffective management on both sides of this particular protest.”

“We hope that she will be able to place on the table what the position has been and how we are going to resolve these issues, because as members of parliament we feel that our constitutional right to participate in the affairs of parliament have been infringed upon.”
