RAF flies into fresh battle for city of Ramadi in IS tussle

EXCLUSIVE: Brit airforce sends in jets to support Iraqi counter-terrorism forces.
Strikes ... Tornado

RAF war jets have launched devastating air strikes to back a fresh offensive on Ramadi, the IS-held city in Iraq, sources said last night.

They flew in support of Iraqi forces on Monday night and insiders said bombs were dropped. A campaign has raged since November to seize the key city, backed by the RAF which has sent out Typhoon and Tornado jets plus Reaper drones.

Ramadi was taken by IS in May but yesterday Iraqi commanders said they had made a significant incursion into the jihadist-held city in the Sunni heartland.

Iraq’s counter-terrorism spokesman Sabah al-Numani said: “It’s a ferocious fight. We can say victory will be achieved in a few days. “Our forces are advancing toward the government complex in the centre of Ramadi.”
He said his troops were clearing roadside bombs as they pushed forward and yesterday reached the downtown district.
