Mohamed Bajjar, 26, even convinced a Brit mum to marry him to get a visa. The market trader duped UK-run charity Care4Calais into making him a “victim of war” poster boy.
Bajjar hoped to get a visa after wooing a mum of two from Greater Manchester he met in Sousse six years ago. They married last March.
The bride, whose identity we are not revealing, refused to fork out the £1,500 for his visa.
She said: “He has always been desperate to live in the UK. He thinks everyone makes a fortune in Britain and it’s easy money.
“He made his way to Calais where he begged me to smuggle him across the Channel or pay £2,000 for someone to do it. I’ve had enough and want a divorce to stop his constant lies.”
He spent months hiding among genuine Syrian refugees in Calais where he receives freebies from Care4Calais. When we tracked him down he admitted his scam. He said: “It is private what I do. I will not do it again.”
Last night Tory MP Philip Davies said: “This is why we’ve got to keep our guard up and we can’t just run away on worthy warm sentiment.”
Fellow Tory Peter Bone praised The Sun saying: “It just shows what a shambolic state Calais and the EU border controls are in.”
