She was being punished by Sharia Police for being ‘in close proximity’ to a man she wasn’t married to.
The man, a fellow university student, was also beaten outside the
mosque in Banda Aceh after the couple allegedly showed affectionate
behaviour towards one another.

The deputy mayor of the province said the punishments were 'a lesson to everyone'

Nur Elita was frogmarched into the
yard of the Baiturrahumim Mosque while a crowd of hundreds cheered as
she was forced to her knees and savagely whipped five times with a cane
by a masked man.

After the flogging she could be seen collapsed
on the floor in agony before being carried off the stage to an ambulance
and rushed to hospital. The man received the same punishment but was forced to stand through his ordeal.

The
pair had apparently committed an offence known as ‘khalwat’ which
prohibits those that aren’t spouses from getting too close to each
other. Four other men were also caned for gambling which is also outlawed under the strict Sharia Law enforced in the territory.

Before
the ceremony commenced the deputy mayor of Banda Aceh, Zainal Arfin
told the gathered crowd that the public canings were a warning to
everyone. He said: “Take these punishments as a lesson.
“What has been done by these convicts should not be taken as an example and I hope these canings today will be their last ever.”
The
province is the only one in Indonesia which enforces Sharia Law which
they introduced in 2003 after the central government granted it special
autonomy status.
