Italy mourns young academic, tortured, slain in Cairo

A tiny town in northern Italy has opened its homes to mourners arriving from afar for the funeral of a 28-year-old doctoral student who was tortured and slain in Egypt, where he was doing research.

Dozens of Giulio Regeni's friends, arriving from many countries, were offered spare rooms and couches by townspeople because lodging is scarce in Fiumicello, a town of a few thousand people.

Residents posted signs reminding media that the funeral on Friday afternoon is private and requesting that photos and videos not be taken.
