Zanu-PF bans social media abuse as Mugabe blasts feuding party bigwigs

Following an intense politburo meeting on Wednesday, Zimbabwe's ruling Zanu-PF party has reportedly banned the abuse of social media by party members, saying that anyone who did not adhere to the rules would be dealt with.

According to the state-owned Herald, party spokesperson Simon Khaya Moyo said the meeting resolved that party members without authorisation should not distribute party information via conventional media. 

The decision came in the wake of frenzied tweeting by Higher and Tertiary Minister Jonathan Moyo.Moyo has been under fire for fanning factionalism and using his Twitter account to attack senior Zanu-PF members, among them Vice President Emmerson Mnangagwa.

Party members have also been accused of using the privately owned media to attack each other. "Expressing oneself through the Press, including the use of social media must stop with immediate effect.


"Leadership calls for responsibility and not for rumour-mongering and insults. The party has structures and procedures to be religiously adhered to. The party is not run through the Press, so we are not allowing any member of the party at whatever level to run the party through the Press," Khaya Moyo was quoted saying.

Mugabe himself took a swipe at party leaders who were attacking each other through the press, describing their actions as an "embarrassment to the party and themselves".



Mugabe told party members to desist from using the press to attack each other, as this was arming opposition parties into believing that they were better than his party, reported New Zimbabwe.
