Ugandan opposition leader asks court to free him from house arrest

Uganda's main opposition leader and Forum for Democratic Change (FDC) flag bearer, Kizza Besigye, has sought the help of the courts to evict security police who have placed him under house arrest since the country's election day, reports Daily Monitor.

Besigye's lawyers petitioned the the Kasangati Magistrate's Court to get rid of the police presence outside their client's house "with immediate effect". 

Police were ordered to block Besigye from leaving his home since election day on February 18.

Besigye was arrested multiple times in the election week before he was finally put under house arrest. 

The presidential elections saw Besigye walking away with 35% of the vote, while incumbent President Yoweri Museveni came out victorious with 60%, thus winning a fifth term. 


Besigye alleged massive vote rigging and called the poll results "fraudulent".
