Two people have been killed and more than 40 arrested since party members in parts of Tshwane began protesting on Monday against the choice of ANC NEC member and MP Thoko Didiza.
They wanted current mayor Kgosientso Ramokgopa to stay in the job after the local government elections. The ANC announced its mayoral candidates for the August 3 local government elections after much deliberation by its national executive committee on Saturday evening.
It however waited until Monday to announce Didiza. Mayor Parks Tau would remain its candidate in Johannesburg. Deputy Trade and Industry Minister Mzwandile Masina was chosen to replace Ekurhuleni mayor Mondli Gungubele.
