Iraq takes 'last IS bastion in Falluja'

The Iraqi army says it has seized the last strongholds of the so-called Islamic State (IS) group in the city of Falluja.

The head of the counterterrorism forces in the operation, Lt Gen Abdul-Wahad al-Saadi, said his troops had entered the northwestern Golan neighbourhood, the last area still under IS control.

The city was "fully liberated", he said. IS seized control of the city in January 2014.

Earlier this month, Iraqi Prime Minister Haider al-Abadi hailed the "liberation" of the city after troops raised the Iraqi flag over the city council building.

At least 1,800 militants were killed in the operation to retake Falluja, Lt Gen al-Saadi said.
