Two suspects accused of repackaging and reselling expired rice appear in court on May 27, 2019

Two suspects were Monday arraigned in a Nairobi court for allegedly repackaging and reselling expired rice.

Appearing before Nairobi Chief Magistrate Francis Andayi, the accused; John Mbugua and Jeremiah Kuria, denied the charges and were released on a cash bail of Ksh.200,000 or Ksh.300, 000 bond.

The case was set for mentioning on June 10 and hearing on July 2, 2019. The two suspects were arrested following a raid by detectives from the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) at a godown in Kariobangi South, Nairobi County, on May 14, 2019.

The raid was conducted after a tip-off from members of the public to the multi-agency team that included police and public health officials.

The sleuths unearthed a scheme where expired rice was being repackaged into new bags bearing expiry dates from June 2019 to 2021 to dupe unsuspecting Kenyans.
