All passengers were evacuated and nobody was injured as thick smoke billowed out of the train, which was made up of five carriages. A West Midlands Ambulance Service spokesman said: “The passengers were taken off the train and into a shelter at a local school.

“Our staff were on standby while the other emergency services dealt with the fire. Fortunately no-one was injured.”

London Midland confirmed a fire broke out on the 0747 Leamington Spa - Worcester SH at around 0815 this morning.

They have launched an investigation into the cause of the fire and the independent Rail Accident Investigation Bureau has been informed.

A London Midland spokesman said: “We apologise for the inconvenience this will cause.
"Passengers are advised to check their journeys on our website and twitter feed, @LondonMidland.
“And don’t forget to claim your Delay Repay compensation if your journey took 30 minutes longer than scheduled.”
