Mum Kerry Spencer, 44, ploughed through a wall into the vehicle waiting at a junction after downing two bottles of wine. A court heard that the impact pushed driver Amber Chitty’s car across the road and on to the kerb, and left her three children, aged ten, seven and two, in tears.

After then driving into a tree, Spencer ditched her 4x4 and was found hiding at her £650,000 home by police officers. Prosecuting, Sam Doyle said: “She smelled of alcohol.” Spencer told cops she ran off because she was scared of losing her licence and not being able to take her son to school.

She had been a director at Essex-based logistics firm African Cargo Services. Stuart Cowen, defending, said: “She got into the culture of drinking to schmooze clients. It led to a reliance on alcohol.”
Spencer, of Brentwood, Essex, admitted drink-driving. She was disqualified by Basildon magistrates for 30 months.
