Man with 9 drunken driving incidents sent to prison

A Wayne County man whose criminal history includes nine drunken driving incidents was sentenced Thursday to prison.

Derick Levon Debord, 40, apologized to the “woman who got scared when I hit the curb,” and tearfully told the court, “I’m an alcoholic.”

Judge Miriam Cavanaugh did not appear moved, however, as she ordered Debord to serve a 4- to 20-year prison sentence for driving drunk on Michigan Avenue in Howell.

She also sentenced him to 84 days in the Livingston County Jail for driving on a suspended license and she gave him credit for 84 days he’s already served in the county jail, according to Livingston County Circuit Court records.

In making her ruling, Cavanaugh noted that Debord’s criminal history includes 24 misdemeanors, and the current conviction was his fourth for third-offense drunken driving. In all, he has nine convictions related to driving drunk, she noted.
