But in a bid to protect the terrified Christian passengers, Muslims on board the bus refused to bow to their demands, insisting that they all be either released or killed in a show of solidarity.
Mandera Governor Ali Roba said: “The locals showed a sense of patriotism and belonging to each other by insisting that the al-Shabab should kill them together or leave them alone.”
The attack took place near the north-eastern village of El Wak on the Somali border – an area often targeted by Al-Shabab militants.
However, the Islamic terrorist group, which is linked to al-Qaida, has not claimed responsibility for the attack on the bus, which was travelling from the capital Nairobi to the town of Mandera.
