Western Cape police are gearing up as tourists flock to the coast for
the holidays and people max out their credit cards for Christmas.
Officers
had been phasing-in a festive season security strategy since October,
Brigadier Tanya Hoskings, from the provincial command centre, said on
Thursday.
Given the increase in visitors, spending and events, the
strategy’s main focus would be to "curb crime" and maintain public
order. The police service would work with law enforcement officers and
other partners.
Beaches have been identified as one of the high-risk areas. Hoskings
said efforts were focused on Monwabisi beach, Sunrise beach, Table View
beach and Camps Bay, as well as the beachfronts in Mossel Bay and
George.
Although not always successful, officers would try to stop the public from bringing alcohol to the beach, Hoskings said. "Alcohol is being widely abused and sometimes results in children going missing, because parents don’t see where they are."
Criminals
were opportunists and the festive season was the perfect time to break
into empty homes or prey on unsuspecting people, Hoskings said, while
also warning the public to be aware of their surroundings.
People
should record as many details as possible about suspicious vehicles or
people. They should also try taking a photo of suspects if it was safe
to do so. "If something does happen and we need to follow up, keep those details available. The devil is in the detail."
