Cops appeal for mum of baby in a bag found blocking drain to come forward

POLICE are appealing for the mum of a dead baby in a bag found blocking a drain to come forward. The horrific discovery was made when a plumber was called to clear a drain at a family home in Grimsby, North East Lincs., yesterday afternoon.

Humberside Police immediately launched an investigation after being called to the scene, which has since been closed off. Officers remain on site and forensics have been seen at the premises.

Detectives are carrying out house-to-house enquiries and continue to guard the property. A spokesperson said: "We can confirm the body of a baby has been found." Detective Inspector Christine Calvert said the house owners contacted police in "extreme shock".

She said: "They are helping with enquiries as much as they can." It is not known how old the baby was, but tests are currently being carried out and a post mortem will take place on Monday.
 One resident on the road said he was "shocked" by the discovery. Nigel Grocott, who lives at the opposite end of the road from the property where the corpse was found, said they first he heard of it was when somebody knocked on his door and told him.

He said: "All I can tell you is someone knocked on the door and said there had been an incident down Scartho Road, there has been a little baby found in a manhole.
