More gang violence in same facility where 49 inmates were killed in February clashes

THREE lags have been killed and 19 others injured in yet another massive riot at Mexico’s notorious Topo Chico jail.
Local authorities said the clashes between inmates were quickly contained by guards who fired tear gas into the mob.

| The violence at Topo Chico was sparked by an attempt to kill a gang leader, who was confirmed among the dead
|
Nuevo
Leon state general secretary Manuel Gonzalez said prison officer
responded within two minutes but three people were already dead by the
time they arrived to contain the violence.
It is not the first time the jail, in the north-eastern city of Monterrey, has seen rioting on this scale.

The facility was the
scene
of one of the bloodiest prison clashes in modern Mexican history in
February of this year, when 49 inmates were killed and many more wounded.
News
of that bloody day – involving two rival factions of the brutal Zetas
cartel shook the country, and led to prison authorities promising to
tighten security.

| The gorvernment has said it will support the families of those hurt or killed by paying medical and funeral costs
|
Interior secretary Miguel Angel Osorio Chong told Mexico’s
Radio Formula that the incident showed Topo Chico was rife with corruption and claimed inmates could act with impunity.

|
Four former prison workers were arrested in the immediate aftermath,
and a treasure trove of contraband was seized from inmates – including
more than 200 weapons as well as luxury items like saunas, food stands,
fridges and even aquariums.
 |
| Back in February, 49 people were killed in a massive riot, with many more seriously injured
|
But the latest spate of violence has
led to fresh criticism of the authorities, who have promised to support
the families of the victims by taking care of medical and funeral costs.

| The last spate of violence at the prison led to a security crackdown in which over 200 weapons were seized

Governor Manuel Gonzalez Flores, and the secretary of public
security, General Cuauhtemoc Antunez, visited the prison and confirmed
nobody had escaped and no guns were used in the fight.
Speaking outside Topo Chico on Wednesday night, Gonzalez said: “We
have a prison with a lot of deficiencies because it is a very old
prison¿the fight between prisoners is part of a very big problem.”
The
incident this week appeared to have been sparked by an attempt to
assassinate a gang leader, who he confirmed was among those killed. The
dead prisoners were named as Edelmiro Guadalupe Gaspar Gonzalez Rubio,
Jesus Ledezma Ramirez, Javier Orlando Galindo Puente or Jesus Galindo
Puente, who went by the alias ‘el Maruchan.’
Five of the most seriously injured men were also rushed to a nearby hospital after the incident. Mexico's
National Human Rights Commission said in April of this year that most
of country’s prisons were poorly equipped, overcrowded and dangerous.
