The last spate of violence at the prison led to a security crackdown in which over 200 weapons were seized
Governor Manuel Gonzalez Flores, and the secretary of public security, General Cuauhtemoc Antunez, visited the prison and confirmed nobody had escaped and no guns were used in the fight.

Speaking outside Topo Chico on Wednesday night, Gonzalez said: “We have a prison with a lot of deficiencies because it is a very old prison¿the fight between prisoners is part of a very big problem.”

The incident this week appeared to have been sparked by an attempt to assassinate a gang leader, who he confirmed was among those killed. The dead prisoners were named as Edelmiro Guadalupe Gaspar Gonzalez Rubio, Jesus Ledezma Ramirez, Javier Orlando Galindo Puente or Jesus Galindo Puente, who went by the alias ‘el Maruchan.’

Five of the most seriously injured men were also rushed to a nearby hospital after the incident. Mexico's National Human Rights Commission said in April of this year that most of country’s prisons were poorly equipped, overcrowded and dangerous.
