Odera's last-gasp penalty fires Leopards to victory, go joint top with Gor

Ezekiel Odera’s last-gasp penalty at the Kenyatta Stadium, Machakos secured AFC Leopards a hard fought 2-1 victory over Kakamega Homeboyz, their fourth victory on the spin as the big cats surge continues under Tanzanian coach Dennis Kitambi.

The goal, Odera’s fifth, hauled Leopards joint top on the Kenyan Premier League table on 16 points, same as Gor Mahia who, however, have a game in hand.

Leopards had toyed with the grim danger of dropping two points after their opening goal in the 13th minute, scored by Marvin Nabwire, was cancelled out by Homboyz Estone Esiye but Odera rose up when needed most, nicking it neatly in the net to evoke wild celebrations from the club’s hundreds of fans at the venue.

At the Camp Toyoyo grounds in Nairobi, Joe Waithira and Kenneth Wendo were on target as Wazito FC defeated cash-strapped Nakumatt FC 2-0 for their third win of the season.

At the Afraha Stadium in Nakuru, 10-man Posta Rangers battled to force a 2-2 draw with hosts Ulinzi Stars FC while Mathare United bounced back from last week’s defeat to AFC Leopards to down Sony Sugar 2-1.

Mwana Yema had given Sony the early lead in the 20th before goals from Clifford Alwanga and Chrispine Oduor helped Francis Kimanzi’s man fight back to take all the three points.

Kariobangi Sharks and Bandari FC – both of whom claimed wins on Saturday – are second and third respectively with Gor Mahia FC still ahead of the pack despite playing one game less than the rest.
